Mary Prince - an extraordinary life
Mary Prince was a West Indian slave in the late 18thC and also for the first third of the 19thC, when she was taken by her master and mistress to England. And, since slavery was unlawful within the British Isles, she was free by default, but only as long as she remained in Britain. Historically, then, because we have her testimony, she is widely regarded as the first freed slave woman in Britain. And so hers is naturally the first female story of slavery recorded here.
